Cats & Poisonous Plants; not a good mix! Cats are curious and they are drawn to chewing on plants. Consequently, they probably won’t read this, so it’s our responsibility to keep those plants out of their area. I have a list of Poisonous plants and another list of Toxic plants. Keep them all out of reach.
Incidentally, the lists I find don’t always agree about certain plants. If you are thinking of bringing a new plant into your home, do some research first. Just ask Google about it. I have several beautiful Angel Trumpets that are highly toxic. Some folks break out in a rash if they just brush against them; they don’t bother me at all. However, when it gets cold, they get gently wrapped with sheets and flannel-backed vinyl tablecloths. One of my cats, Olivia, would definitely chew on them. If in doubt; leave it out!
Lilies are Bad News for Cats! POISONOUS!
They are gorgeous and so fragrant but don’t even try to put them on your Easter table! You cannot trust even the most well-behaved cat! Besides, it’s not worth the risk. Other beautiful plants to add to the dangerous list are Daffodils, Cyclamen, Azalea, and castor Beans! Also, Tulips, Hydrangea, Holly, Mistletoe, and Sweet William. Some of those are my favorites and probably yours as well. The lovely Poinsettia seems to still be in limbo. Some lists say it’s bad and others say it’s harmless. I say, “Don’t mess with it!” Just about any plant that grows from a bulb is dangerous.
Cats and Toxic Plants
Cats and less poisonous plants! Still not worth the risk! These will cause less serious problems but the list is longer! Aloe, Begonia, Bird of Paradise, Bougainvillea, Calla Lily, Carnation, Chrysanthemum, Coleus, Cosmos, Dumb Cane, Elephant Ear, Fleabane, Gardenia, Geranium, Hibiscus, Iris and Mother – in-Law’s Tongue. Fortunately, most of these plants are for outside so we get a break here. Hanging them up might be a good idea, when suitable. Incidentally, I’ve had cats get into floral arrangements when they contain carnations! We just need to be diligent when we live with our beloved cats. Moreover, you know your cats; some never get into trouble. Then, there’s Olivia and Mosie! However, you gotta love them!
Cats & Poisonous Plants; WHAT IF?
What if your cat accidentally gets ahold of the wrong thing? Try to get whatever is left away from the cat. Call your Veterinarian or Emergency Pet Clinic. Take the cat in for treatment, if recommended, along with the leftover plant. It’s best to take the cat’s file along, especially if you have to go to the Emergency Clinic. Patient history is helpful.
